Why business credit should be separate from personal
Protect your personal score and unlock funding by keeping your business finances on their own footing.
When you start a business, it's tempting to run everything through your personal credit card and checking account. It feels faster, and in the first few weeks it usually is. But every dollar you charge personally for the business is a dollar of personal credit utilization — and utilization is one of the largest factors in your FICO score. A single busy month of inventory or ad spend can push your personal score down 40–80 points, even if you pay the balance in full.
Business credit exists precisely so that operating expenses don't sit on top of your mortgage, auto loan, and personal cards. When you open a business bank account, get an EIN, and start opening tradelines in the business's name, those balances report to Dun & Bradstreet, Experian Business, and Equifax Business — not to your personal file. Your personal FICO stays clean, and the business builds its own track record.
A separated profile also protects you legally. If the business is an LLC or corporation and you consistently mix personal and business funds, a court can 'pierce the corporate veil' and hold you personally liable for business debts. Keeping the credit profiles separate is one of the strongest signals that the entity is real and independently operated.
The funding ceiling is the other big reason. Personal cards typically cap out somewhere between $10k and $50k in total exposure to one borrower. Business tradelines routinely reach $50k–$250k per account once you have a few years of on-time payments reporting, because the underwriting is based on the business's cash flow and payment history rather than your personal DTI.
The practical move: open a business checking account today, apply for an EIN (it's free and takes five minutes at IRS.gov), and start routing every business expense through business-named accounts. Even if you're pre-revenue, the paper trail you create now is what lenders will underwrite against in 12–24 months.
One warning: 'separate' means separate. Don't personally guarantee tradelines you don't have to, don't co-mingle deposits, and never pay a personal bill from the business account. Every exception weakens the wall you're trying to build.
